Resumo: | Dentistry is considered a profession of occupational risk for Work- Related Musculoskeletal Disorders/Repetitive Strain Injuries. These conditions can be measured by an instrument named DASH (Disabilities Arm, Shoulder and Hand). However, there is little information about these conditions among dentistry students. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate disabilities of arm, shoulder and hand among these students and also the associated factors in 2007. Self-applicable questionnaires were given to the universe of dentistry students, from the 1st to the 8th terms, of a course in Belo Horizonte, in the second semester, 2007. To evaluate disabilities, it was used the instrument DASH which has been validated in Brazil. In order to measure independent variables, it was applied a questionnaires with questions about the period of course, gender, labor, exercising, sleeping and dental clinical assistance. The last variable was only assessed for students from the 8th term. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS software version 11.0 applying Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests, considering p < 0,05. From the universe of 90 students, 74 (82,2%) filled correctly the survey forms. The only statistical association found involved higher disabilities of arm, shoulder and hand among individuals who have never practiced sports compared which those who exercised regularly by the research time (p = 0,02). It was concluded that it seems there is no impact caused by clinical activities developed by the students and also socio-demographic variables and sleeping for those disabilities. Exercising can be seen as a protection factor for the evaluated condition among dentistry students. |
