Resumo: This study aimed to assess the adequacy of the training of education professionals, whose professional position could enable the dissemination of knowledge and habits suitable for promoting oral health among the children under their tutelage. A questionnaire composed of open and closed questions was filled out by 339 students enrolled in the Higher Normal School, Hermínio Ometto University Center, Araras, SP, Brazil. It was found that 98.2% reported having information with respect to factors responsible for caries disease, among whom, 66% considered themselves to be satisfactorily informed about it. The lack of hygiene (93.5%) and exaggerated sugar consumption (49%) were the factors most cited with reference to the etiology of caries disease, and the most cited source of information was the dentist (50%), followed by the school (27.1%), the family (20.9%), the media (15.6%), participation in lectures (16%) and daily life (12.4%). It was concluded that the teacher’s activity as an oral health agent requires training on the part of education professionals and the support of higher administrative levels.

Um questionário composto por questões abertas e fechadas foi respondido por 339 alunos matriculados no Curso Normal Superior do Centro Universitário Hermínio Ometto de Araras.
