Covering/uncovering: current and past cultural intertwining

Resumo: According to Jurij Lotman (2006), the cultural intertwining that characterisethe human behaviour in various periods can be defined as mythology of everyday andsocial behaviour. Starting from this methodological assumption, the article investigatesthe dynamics of covering/uncovering in dress fashion along three paragraphs. The first isdedicated to the link between images of veiling and mourning, both in western Christianand pre-Christian cultures. Protective coverings for COVID, and other recent phenomenasuch as the black dress code of the #MeToo movement, have their roots in this tradition. Inthe second paragraph, the reflection is based on the opposition between / must be seen/vs / must not be seen/, which generates regimes of /constraint/, /taboo/, /transgressivestyle/ / and /casual style/. In the western context it seems that a neutral term has now become established, that is a randomness of styles (/neither transgressive, nor casual/)while the more traditionalist Islam seems to remain within the /taboo/ by imposing onwomen, the use of the veil and body cover, albeit with variations. However, in the thirdand last paragraph I will discuss the so-called Islamic modest fashion, a relatively recentphenomenon that seems to create an unprecedented complex term, which combines thetraditional restrictions for women’s dressing with an increased attention to eleganceand ease of movement. In conclusion, we will reflect on the wider cultural context of thischange, since the hegemony of transgression or randomness of Western customs seem tobe largely declining globally, with further examples in television series and films production.

Partendo da questo presupposto metodologico, l’articolo indaga le dinamiche di copertura/scoprimento nel campo del vestire lungo tre paragrafi. Il primo è dedicato al legame cheunisce, nella cultura occidentale precristiana e cristiana, la figura della velatura con il lutto. Idispositivi contro il covid, e altri fenomeni recenti come il dress code nero del movimento #Me-Too, affondano le loro radici in questa tradizione. Nel secondo paragrafo la riflessione si basasull’opposizione fra /È necessario che si veda/ vs /È necessario che non si veda/, che generaregimi di /costrittività/, /tabù/, /trasgressività/ e /casualità/. In ambito occidentale sembra sisia affermato ormai un termine neutro, ovvero un’aleatorietà degli stili (/né trasgressione, nécasualità/) mentre l’Islam più tradizionalista sembra rimanere nell’ambito del /tabù/ imponendoalla donna, seppur con varianti, l’uso del velo e della copertura del corpo. Tuttavia nelterzo e ultimo paragrafo si vedrà il caso della cosiddetta modest fashion islamica, un fenomenorelativamente recente che sembra realizzare un inedito termine complesso, che coniuga le limitazionitradizionali con la ricerca dell’eleganza e della libertà motoria della donna. In conclusione,si riflette sul più ampio contesto culturale di questo cambiamento, poiché l’egemonia dellatrasgressività o della aleatorietà dei costumi occidentali sembrano ampiamente in declino alivello globale, anche per quanto riguarda le serie televisive e i film.O conjunto dos entrelaçamentos que codificam o comportamento humano nasvárias épocas pode ser definido, segundo Jurj Lotman (2006), como mitologia do comportamentocotidiano e social. Partindo desse pressuposto metodológico, o artigo investigaa dinâmica de cobertura/desvelamento no campo do vestuário ao longo de três partes.A primeira é dedicada ao vínculo que une a figura do velamento com o luto na culturaocidental pré-cristã e cristã. Os dispositivos contra o covid e outros fenômenos recentes,como o dress code preto do movimento #MeToo, aprofundam o radical nessa tradição. Nasegunda parte, a reflexão se baseia na oposição entre É necessário que se veja vs. É necessárioque não se veja, que provoca regimes de constrição, tabu, transgressão e causalidade.No contexto ocidental parece já estabelecido um termo neutro que é a aleatoriedadede estilos (nem transgressão, nem aleatoriedade), enquanto o Islã mais tradicionalistapermanece no contexto do tabu, impondo à mulher, embora com variações, o uso do véue a cobertura do corpo. Porém, na terceira e última parte, veremos o caso da consideradamodesta moda islâmica, um fenômeno relativamente recente que cria um termo inédito ecomplexo, o qual conjuga as limitações tradicionais com a busca da elegância e da liberdadede movimento da mulher.
