Resumo: Objective: The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on the dentists’ knowledge in the treatment of patients with epilepsy. Material and Methods: A literature review was conducted using bibliographic research of books and databases, such as PubMed Central and Scientific Electronic Library Online. Results: We noted several precautions that should be taken. The best approach follows from the importance of anamnesis, checking the types of seizures and their trigger times, and the patient’s use of medications and their effects. However, there are several other details that dentists should be aware of, including safety concerns in the use of local anesthetics; care during consultation, especially with reflector lights; drug interactions with antiepileptic drugs and the direct and indirect oral implications of these drugs; potential dental injuries due to seizures; and treatments and approaches for intervention during emergency. Conclusion: Dentists need to be aware of the main complications while treating epileptic patients because of their neurological characteristics and should always seek to offer the best guidance on treatment and dental management.

Conclusão: O CD precisa conhecer as principais características do paciente epilético devido a suas particularidades neurológicas, sempre buscando oferecer as melhores orientações no tratamento e manejo odontológicos.Associação Brasileira de Odontologia - Seção Rio de JaneiroBaumgarten, AlexandreCancino, Claudia Marcela Hernandez2016-09-30info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionRevisão da Literaturaapplication/pdfhttps://revista.aborj.org.br/index.php/rbo/article/view/73910.18363/rbo.v73n3.p.231Revista Brasileira de Odontologia; v. 73, n. 3 (2016); 231Revista Brasileira de Odontologia; v. 73, n. 3 (2016); 2311984-3747reponame:Revista Brasileira de Odontologiainstname:Associação Brasileira de Odontologia (ABO)instacron:ABOporhttps://revista.aborj.org.br/index.php/rbo/article/view/739/536Direitos autorais 2016 Revistashttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2016-09-30T12:55:32Zoai:revista_aborj_org_br.www.revista.aborj.org.br:article/739Revistahttps://revista.aborj.org.br/index.php/rboONGhttp://www.revista.aborj.org.br/index.php/rbo/oaihttps://revista.aborj.org.br/index.php/rbo/oai0034-72721984-3747opendoar:2016-09-30T12:55:32Revista Brasileira de Odontologia - Associação Brasileira de Odontologia (ABO)false
