Resumo: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum. However, there are examples of hematogenic and transmission from mother to child in utero. Primary syphilis is characterized by chancre, can be observed in oral cavity as a firm, painless ulceration. Mucous patches represent the secondary syphilis oral manifestations. Tertiary syphilis is characterized by the formation of gummas which can lead to perforation of the hard palate. Syphilis diagnosis must be based on the stage of the disease. Syphilis treatment consists of antibiotics. Since syphilis can be identified by its oral lesions, the dentist must know this disease.

Pode ser transmitida também pelas vias hematogênica e materno-fetal. A sífilis primária é caracterizada pelo cancro, observado na mucosa bucal na forma de úlcera firme e indolor. As placas mucosas representam a manifestação oral da sífilis secundária. A sífilis terciária é caracterizada pela formação de gomas que podem levar à perfuração do palato. O diagnóstico de sífilis deve ser baseado de acordo com o estágio da doença. O tratamento da sífilis consiste em antibioticoterapia.
