Social cognition in psychiatry: essential definitions and terminologies for clinical and research practice

Resumo: Social cognition is a topic of great interest in studying psychopathological phenomena in psychiatry. Although there has been a notable advance in research in the Brazilian context, the failure in data replication leads to the need for an alignment in the terminology of the concepts that govern the social functioning domain. This review briefly outlines the main concepts related to social functioning, subject to investigation and clinical management: social cognition, social skills, and social competence. This review concludes by highlighting current investigative methodological limitations and the need to develop a taxonomy of social cognition.

Aunque haya habido un avance notable en la investigación también en el contexto brasileño, la falla en la replicación de datos la necesidad de una alineación en la terminología de los conceptos que rigen el dominio del funcionamiento social. El objetivo de esta revisión es esbozar brevemente los principales conceptos relacionados con el dominio del funcionamiento social, objeto de investigación y manejo clínico: cognición social, habilidades sociales y competencia social. Esta revisión concluye destacando las limitaciones metodológicas de investigación actuales y la necesidad de desarrollar una taxonomía de la cognición social.A cognição social é um tema de grande interesse para o aprofundamento de fenômenos psicopatológicos em psiquiatria. Embora tenha havido um notório avanço nas pesquisas também em contexto brasileiro, a falha na replicação dos dados a necessidade de um alinhamento na terminologia dos conceitos que regem o domínio de funcionamento social. O objetivo desta revisão é delinear brevemente os principais conceitos referentes ao domínio de funcionamento social, passíveis de investigação e manejo clinico: a cognição social, as habilidades sociais e a competência social.
