Resumo: Objective: To investigate the social inclusion of longterm inpatients with mental illnesses discharged from psychiatric hospitals and transferred to assisted living facilities in a low socioeconomic status community in Porto Alegre. Method: This was a qualitative descriptive study associated with participant observation techniques and in-depth interviews. A total of 25 interviews were conducted with local residents. Results: The community investigated is an invaded area located in the midst of a middle-class neighborhood, dominated by drug trafficking and illegal trading of stolen goods. Social life in the community is limited or nonexistent. Discrimination and stigma are present, including hostile attitudes. Withdrawal of the mentally ill discharged from psychiatric hospitals was observed. Conclusions: The creation of assisted living facilities within the reality of the community hinders the achievement of the objectives of social reintegration, freedom and autonomy restoration in patients with mental illnesses transferred to these alternative services.
