Resumo: The article discusses the probable risks to democracies in the process of formulating andexpressing political preferences in contemporary times, in particular, the impact that themedia has on social and political relations. From a case study that follows the temporalcut of the electoral process of the United States of 2016, the research is structured in sevensections, the first two discuss conceptual issues of civic conscience, the third the role ofthe media and the others deal with the case study.

A partir de un estudio decaso que sigue el corte temporal del proceso electoral de los Estados Unidos de 2016,la investigación se estructura en siete apartados, los dos primeros abordan cuestionesconceptuales de la conciencia cívica, el tercero el papel de los medios de comunicación ylos demás tratan el estudio de caso.O artigo discute os prováveis riscos às democracias no processo de formular e exprimir preferências políticas na contemporaneidade, em especial, o impacto que a mídia exerce nas relações sociais e políticas.
