Resumo: The article analyzes the self-images constructed by the Brazilian government for two 19thcentury Universal Exhibitions (Paris 1889 and Saint Louis 1904). It seeks to understand thecontent and interests of these self-images propagated in these events, the first occurringduring the Empire and the second during the Brazilian republican period. The work agreesthat these participations were a proto public diplomacy used to improve Brazil’s internationalimage. Through the primary qualitative bibliographic and documentary analysis, fourareas were established: political, modernity, economic and racial. Of the four, only thepolitician presented amendments. Despite changes in foreign policy, in the other axes, themaintenance of images was observed.

El trabajo coincide enque estas participaciones fueron una protodiplomacia pública utilizada para mejorar laimagen internacional de Brasil. A través del análisis bibliográfico y documental cualitativoprimario se establecieron cuatro áreas: política, modernidad, económica y racial. De loscuatro, sólo el político presentó enmiendas. A pesar de los cambios en la política exterior,en los demás ejes se observó el mantenimiento de las imágenes.Analisam-se as autoimagens construídas pelo governo brasileiro para duas Exposições Universais oitocentistas (Paris 1889 e Saint Louis 1904). Busca-se entender o conteúdo e interesses dessas autoimagens propagadas nesses eventos, a primeira ocorrida no Império e a segunda no período republicano brasileiro. O trabalho concorda que essas participações eram uma proto-diplomacia pública utilizada para melhorar a imagem internacional do Brasil. Pela análise qualitativa bibliográfica e documental primária, foram estabelecidos quatro âmbitos: político, modernidade, econômico e racial. Dos quatro, apenas o político apresentou alterações.
