The conduct the foreign policy toward the United States of America (USA) has sparked many debates. What would be the best posture to be followed? In spite of the pertinence of the question, such an approximation with the USA is not something new. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the Brazil-United States diplomatic relationship between 1889and 1942, and to show what this relationship represented for each actor. Through a bibliographic research with a historical approach, it is intended to show that Brazil has no history, in the presented time frame, of alignment without bargaining in its politicaldiplomatic relationship with the United States of America. In other words, the approach was generally dictated by the need to generate economic, political and military gains for Brazil. On the other hand, the American position in the relationship oscillated between lack of interest, patience and attitude of attack, but not interventionist.
