Nowadays, many studies about Emotional Intelligence (EI) are being developed around the world,because of, especially, its relevance in organizations that need human relations to guarantee agreat operative capacity, such as in corporations and the Armed Forces. Despite this, few studieshave a conclusive result concerning EI and its relation to a subject cognitive, affective andpsychomotor efficiency. This work aimed to measure the Emotional Intelligence of Third-YearEngineering Course cadets at Agulhas Negras Military Academy (AMAN) and correlate to theiracademic performance. For this, the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (Schutte, Malouff,Bhullar, 1998) was used, composed of two dimensions: expression and regulation of emotions(ERE) and uses of emotions (UE). A personal information questionnaire was also appliedspecifically for the present work. Forty-nine cadets from the same instruction year participated inthis study and besides the EI Scale, they also indicated their grades in subjects as MilitaryPhysical Training (MPT) and their course classification (composed of cognitive, attitudinal andpsychomotor assessments). Making use of statistical analysis, it was possible to identify a positiveand meaningful correlation between EI (“use of emotions” dimension) and cadet’s classification(r=0,321; p<0,005). However, the correlation to physical aptitude was with no statisticalsignificance. The results of this survey suggest that Emotional Intelligence (“use of emotions”dimension) can be important to cadets during his/her formation at AMAN.
