Resumo: Throughout the wars of mankind, homo militaris has always created objects of war used to subdue men, peoples and nations in the course of their historical process. One of these objects, however, marked the history of civilizations: the military sword. Throughout its existence, the sword has become an instrument of great historical and archaeological interest more than any other military instrument, once its perennity is only paralleled by its universality, considering the sword was a weapon of war which was employed by both eastern and western nations. With this regard, it would be too simplistic to think that, nowadays, the sword of modern officers has an exclusive use for solemnities and military ceremonies. Thus, the scope of this article is to discuss the possible motivations that led the officers, as a military establishment, to choose the sword as their object of symbolic power.
