The Science and Technology Institutes play a key role in the development of scientific research in Brazil and constitute an important environment for innovation. The objective of this article is to use the Systemic Approach, allied to Design Management, as a tool to understand the processes of research and development at Embrapa, assisting in the identification of new opportunities for research projects. Therefore, this research is applied, with a qualitative approach and its objectives are exploratory and descriptive, with technical procedures divided into bibliographic research and case study. The study showed that the Systemic Approach and the use of diagrams contribute to the understanding of the organization in its integrality, identifying the insertion of design in the system through the levels of Design Management. Therefore, it is possible to create strategies to integrate design into the corporate environment, improving process management and contributing to the strategic objectives of the organization.
