Resumo: The writing of The Prelude accompanied most of William Wordsworth’s literary career. Although sketched in his youth, the poem only appeared to the public after the poet’s death, in 1850. With the late publication however, the Romantic work was not well received by the Victorian readers. Only at the beginning of the 20th century, a reappreciation of the poem takes place and it moves to the center of the Wordsworthian canon. Considering these questions, in this essay we intended to trace the history of the composition of the Prelude, and to recover the picture of its early reception and the beginning of the critical turn in its appreciation.

Aunque esbozado en su juventud, el poema no se hizo público hasta después de la muerte del poeta en 1850. Sin embargo, con su publicación tardía, la obra romántica no fue bien recibida por los lectores victorianos.
