This paper examines the structure of Americanas, published by Machado de Assis in 1875, especially through three key points of its structure: the first and the last poems (“Potira” and “Os Orizes conquistados”, respectively), and the poem “A Gonçalves Dias”, that occupies the central position in the book. The two poems at the extremities of the book are seen as mirrored forms (one in relation to the other). The poem in the middle of the book, on the other hand, composed of two parts, was also analyzed. In addition to these poems, the “Cantiga do rosto branco” – the only poem that was excluded from the book when Machado de Assis published his Poesias completas in 1901 – was also examined. ---DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.25094/rtp.2019n27a620
