Silence becomes a verb when stitched onto the skin: reflections on memory and corporality through the visual and the feminine in Luiza Romão’s Sangria

Resumo: The book Sangria (2017) by the Brazilian poet Luiza Romão deserves more critical attention, not only in its literary dimension but also in its performative one. Through the visual representation of violence against the female body, Sangria denounces the silencing and historical trauma experienced by all women while suggesting the rupture with verbalism as a previous step for creating new historical genealogies from a gender perspective. Therefore, our reading focuses on two central elements of Romão’s work: the body as the locus for working through the tensions derived from writing, rewriting, and overwriting on pager and on skin; and the proper noun (Brasil, Pau Brasil) presented as the epitome of masculine thought in which national history is founded upon. Our critical discussion proposes a dialogue between Luiza Romão’s calendarbook, performance pieces by pioneer female artists and Brazilian modernism.

A través de la representación visual del cuerpo violentado y del silenciamiento femenino, Sangria denuncia el trauma histórico heredado y apunta a la ruptura con el lenguaje verbal como paso previo a la creación de nuevas genealogías histórico-culturales desde una perspectiva de género.  Optamos por una lectura expandida centrada en dos aspectos fundamentales de la obra: el cuerpo como locus a partir del cual trabajar las tensiones surgidas de la escritura, reescritura y sobreescritura en la página y en la piel; el nombre propio como epítome del pensamiento masculino sobre el que se erige la historia nacional y, consecuentemente, la memoria colectiva. Nuestra conversación crítica propone un diálogo entre el libro-calendario de Luiza Romão, obras de artistas pioneras en el campo de la performance y el modernismo brasileño.Pensamos que Sangria (2017), de Luiza Romão, merece maior atenção crítica, não só no plano literário mas também no performativo-visual. Através da representação visual do corpo violentado e do silenciamento feminino, Sangria denuncia o trauma histórico herdado e aponta a ruptura com a linguagem verbal como passo prévio à criação de novas genealogias histórico-culturais sob uma perspectiva de gênero.
