Resumo: Fluency, both in oral and sign language, is a phenomenon that, although quite important for Applied Linguistics, does not have a concept established in the literature and this theoretical gap can have negative impact on pedagogical practice of second language (L2), since academic knowledge supports the teacher's technical knowledge. In order to contribute to fill this gap in studies related to the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), this article adopts the ideas from the Complexity Theory (LARSEN-FREEMAN, 1997; PAIVA, 2011, 2014, 2019) and the conceptions developed by Segalowitz (2016) with the objective of proposing a concept to serve as a reference for future studies in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). This is a conceptual synthesis article, based on a conception of language as a complex system, which deals with fluency under the specificity of Libras visual-manual modality and which understands it as a multidimensional (cognitive fluency, enunciation fluency, social context, motivation and perceptual fluency), situational and dynamic phenomenon.
