Resumo: This article proposes a reflection on irony in José Saramago's works, not only as a rhetorical strategy, but mainly as a romantic irony. Since Baltasar and Blimunda, Saramago has woven a link between the intrusions of his narrators and a subliminal project of education of the gaze that came to be revealed explicitly through the epigraph of Blindness. By ostensibly using the ironic discourse that David Muecke (1995) categorizes as instances of situational and verbal irony, Saramago points to “ethical values [that] are born ingrained in aesthetic value” (GRAÇA apud JAMES, 1995, p.11); values that continue to question the past and the present. Thus, the article proposes the analysis of the ironic ethos that manifests itself in Saramago's novels as the presentification of the author's worldview.

Thus, the article proposes the analysis of the ironic ethos that manifests itself in Saramago's novels as the presentification of the author's worldview.
