Resumo: The study of consumption practices in the interface with the means of mass communication has gained centrality during the past years. The literary narratives, which materialise the social imaginary of the period of their production, can be extremely productive for the discussion of the imbrications between communication and consumption. Reflecting on the emergence of mass society on the basis of poems by Baudelaire, Walter Benjamin initiates this form of critical coupling. And, as we already did in other articles, with classics of Brazilian and world literature, here, on the basis of the tale “Um e outro” - “One and another” by Lima Barreto, in which the car occupies a crucial position in the plot, we investigate aspects of consumption as a classifying system as well as the discourse of advertising, which differentiates the products (Rocha) and distinguishes the individuals (Bourdieu).
