Resumo: In 1905, Aby Warburg formulated a concept that he would call Pathosformeln – a neologism created by him in his studies on Albrecht Dürer, but which was already present, in an inchoate way, in his first writings. Pathosformeln comes to psychic forces present in the collective memory in spectral forms, images featured by intense primeval energy. If the story of the Western thought contributes to the expulsion of the passion (pathos) from the logical and scientifical domain – passion blurs and disrupts what has the intention to be lucid and clear – the legacy and the life of A.W. are testimonies of the undeniable effects of the passion to science. However, before sophisticating the thesis that would change everything that had been said about Renaissance, personal experiences – such as his confinement to a nursing home and the contact with American West tribes – contributed to his insights on Florentine art.
