An approach to residecial tourism in Cozumel Island, México

The tourist destination of Cozumel has experienced in recent years a number of notable changes due to the various types of tourism developed in the town. Cruise tourism and diving are the segments that have been promoted over time and in recent years has begun a promotion of sports tourism. These market segments have been promoters of residential tourism on the island, which has not been subject of academic analysis, therefore, this paper aims to make an approach to the study of it, as the literary review states that this type of tourism has caused strong negative impacts of environmental, economic and social problems for the host community. Several involved in the analysis, such as the resident population, new residents (mainly foreign), government and real estate companies stakeholders are highlighted. Through the application of an instrument for the collection of data and its application in situ, the overall picture of the development of residential tourism in Cozumel was established, but the complexity of the topic and the diversity of variables for analysis require further endevour and multidisciplinary, so this article establishes its attention on three aspects: a) the motivation of foreign exchange for their residence; b) damage on coastal for constructions; c) the division of life forms between local residents and the new resident.
