Poéticas de banheiro: notas sobre formas de (re)existência em uma Universidade

The study that inspires this article looks at the walls of a public university in Brazil: more precisely at the confessions stamped on the restrooms of this institution. This ethnographic study aimed to analyze a set of graffiti displayed in women's restrooms in two teaching units that host different courses. In this study, 230 photographs of graffiti found in bathrooms were analyzed, identifying eight analytical categories, and they are: graffiti and mental health; graffiti and confronting racism; graffiti relating to gender inequalities; graffiti and female sexuality; graffiti related to political issues; graffiti referring to university life; graffiti and personal marketing; graffiti as solidary communications. The main conclusions of this research reveal the thematic diversity that emerges from these medialities and self-medialities shared in these intimate yet public spaces and indicate the power of these communications for the knowledge and recognition of the most striking challenges and difficulties in the academic context articulated with the life beyond the walls of the university. These expressions are of great importance for the reorientation of a permanent and careful institutional positioning, in order to condition a more effective reception and a qualified attention, situated in the real needs of the university community.
