School practices based on the João Penteado collection (in the perspective of comparative history)

This paper aims to discuss the experience of the Workshop School No. 1 (ESCOLA OFICINA N. 1) in Lisbon, Portugal from the perspective of comparative history. The Workshop School No. 1 was established in 1905 by the Society Promoting Asylums, Nurseries and Schools as a trade school by Masons, Republicans and anarchists. Its main purpose was to reach students from working-class neighborhoods, initiating a project associated with the principle of integral education. We seek to understand the singularities of the experience of the workshop school No. 1 in comparison with the Modern School of São Paulo, organized in 1912 by an anarchist workers’ association. One of the main objectives of the text consists in pointing out similarities and also aspects that differentiated them, within the historical context in which they emerged and acted. The study is based on the bibliographical survey around the two schools, as well as other libertarian experiences of the period, and also on the consultation of documents from the João Penteado Collection and the Workshop School No. 1.
