“Instruction, only instruction will make man free on land free”: the influence of Francisco Ferrer and anarchism in the training of a teacher in bumpkin land

Using Raymond Williams and his Sociology of Culture, this article investigated the moments that made possible the formation of the João Penteado as a teacher and his insertion in anarchist epistemology. According to results obtained from analysis of printed sources such as local newspapers - such as Commercio do Jahu and Correio do Jahu - and libertarian newspapers from the capital of São Paulo - such as A Lanterna, A Guerra Social and A Terra Livre -, in addition to the memoirist work of João Penteado Pioneers of the Primary Magisterium, we seek to draw a line between Penteado's didactic experiences as a student and his choices as a libertarian teacher teaching in an isolated school in the rural area of ​​Jaú. These choices resulted in the Bica de Pedra Case and the Penteado’s departure from Jaú.
