Resumo: | Introduction: Several countries have registered increased rates of overweight and obesity among military personnel. Increasing age can be one of the determining factors for overweight. Objective: To evaluate the correlation of age with nutritional status and anthropometric measurements (total body mass, percentage of fat (%F) and skinfolds (SF)) in Brazilian Navy Marines. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional study carried out with 1,107 male military personnel. Anthropometric measurements of body mass, height, %, CO were collected and the Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. Five age groups (years) were determined, G1(18-21), G2(22-24), G3(25-27), G4(28-30), G5(31-33). The variables were analyzed using the Kruskall-Wallis test and Spearman's correlation coefficient. A p-value less than 0.05 was used. Results: The mean BMI of the study population was 24.7 (±3.1 kg/m2), however, 40% were overweight and 7% were obese. G4 and G5 showed a 29.0% significant increase in %F in relation to G1. The thickness of pectoral CD in the G5 group was significantly greater than in G1, G2 and G3, respectively 81.5%, 58.0% and 46.2%. The thickness of subscapular DC in G3, G4 and G5 were significantly greater than in G1, respectively 22.2%, 29.0% and 39.3. There were strong positive linear correlations of %F with subscapular, triceps and pectoral DC and of BMI with subscapular DC. Conclusion: Although the mean of BMI was classified as normal weight, there was increases in prevalence of overweight and obesity as age increased. |
