Resumo: The Unified Health System Technical Schools (ETSUS) are a reference in Brazil for mid-level health formation for SUS. This research aimed to analyze the perception of the directors of the Technical Schools of the Unified Health System on distance education in the training of mid-level health technicians for the SUS. Focus was given to the challenges and the perception that it would be an ideal form of technical education in this modality. Methodology: An exploratory and descriptive study with a quantitative and qualitative approach was conducted using an electronic questionnaire for data collection. Results: In relation to the challenges that were raised, financing of  installations and acquisition of equipment purchases, training of qualified technical staff and student formation for distance education. The ideal profile for technical formation in distance education is directly related for Permanent Health Education Policy: formation of health personnel from the problematization of their work process, active methodologies, knowledge for resolution of the problems of SUS (pragmatism) and the principle of teaching/ service integration. Unified Health System.As escolas Técnicas do Sistema Único de Saúde (ETSUS) são referência no Brasil para a qualificação e formação de técnicos de nível médio em saúde para o sistema público. Esta pesquisa buscou analisar a percepção dos diretores dessas escolas sobre a educação a distância (EaD) na formação do pessoal de nível médio em saúde para o SUS. Foi dado enfoque aos desafios da formação técnica e à percepção do que seria uma concepção de formação técnica ideal nessa modalidade. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo exploratório-descritivo com abordagem quanti-qualitativa, utilizando questionário eletrônico para coleta de dados. Resultados: Em relação aos desafios, foram levantados financiamento das instalações e aquisições de equipamentos, formação de equipe técnica capacitada e capacitação dos alunos para EaD. Constatou-se que a concepção e o perfil ideal para a formação técnica em EaD está diretamente relacionada à Política Nacional de Educação Permanente em Saúde, ou seja, formação do pessoal da saúde a partir da problematização do seu processo de trabalho, metodologias ativas, conhecimento para resolutividade do SUS (pragmatismo) e o princípio da integração ensino/serviço.
