HUMAN IDENTIFICATION: USE OF MANDIBLE PHOTOGRAMMETRY FOR SEX DIAGNOSIS

Resumo: The present study performed photogrammetry of mandibles belonging to the osteological collection of the Center for Studies in Forensic Anthropology of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Pernambuco (CEAF/FOP/UPE) to verify its applicability for sexual diagnosis. A total of 100 mandibles from skeletons aged over 20 years, of both sexes, with intact mandibular ramus and condyle regions, were examined. Photographic images were obtained, followed by 3D mesh generation processing, through software and virtual measurement of each piece, as well as measures of the ramus and condyle of the mandibles in a physical way, for comparison with the digital method.  The data were analyzed using descriptive and exploratory statistics and compared with the manual measurements of the bone pieces, obtaining a significant similarity between the variables: MnRB-D, MnRB-E, MxRB-D, MxRB-E, CC-D, CC-E, LC-D, LC-E, with a standard deviation between 1.2 and 4.0 mm and a general mean with a variance between 0.1 and 0.9 mm. The jaw photogrammetry technique, and its consequent measurement, can complement the human identification expertise in the investigation of sexual diagnosis, obtaining an accuracy of 68.9% for the manual model and 72.4% for the virtual one through logistic regression script.

Se examinaron 100 mandíbulas de esqueletos con edades superiores a los 20 años, de ambos sexos, con las regiones de rama y cóndilo mandibulares íntegras. Se obtuvieron imágenes fotográficas, seguidas del procesamiento y generación de mallas 3D mediante el software, y se realizaron mediciones virtuales de cada pieza, así como las mediciones del ramo y del cóndilo de las mandíbulas de forma física, para su comparación con el método digital. Los datos fueron analizados mediante estadísticas descriptivas y exploratorias, y se compararon con las mediciones manuales de las piezas óseas, obteniéndose una similitud significativa entre las variables: MnRB-D, MnRB-E, MxRB-D, MxRB-E, CC-D, CC-E, LC-D, LC-E, con una desviación estándar entre 1,2 y 4,0 mm y una media general con una variabilidad entre 0,1 y 0,9 mm. La técnica de fotogrametría de mandíbulas y su consecuente medición pueden complementar la pericia de identificación humana en la investigación del diagnóstico sexual, logrando una precisión del 68,9% para el modelo manual y del 72,4% para el virtual, mediante un script de regresión logística.O presente estudo realizou a fotogrametria de mandíbulas pertencentes à coleção osteológica do Centro de Estudos em Antropologia Forense da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de Pernambuco (CEAF/FOP/UPE), com o intuito de verificar sua aplicabilidade para a diagnose sexual. Foram examinadas 100 mandíbulas de esqueletos com idades acima dos 20 anos, de ambos os sexos, com as regiões de ramo e côndilo mandibulares íntegras. Foram obtidas imagens fotográficas, seguidas do processamento geração de malhas 3D, através do software e medição virtual de cada peça, assim também como as mensurações do ramo e do côndilo das mandíbulas de forma fisica, para comparação com o método digital.  Os dados foram analisados por meio de estatística descritiva e exploratória e comparados com as medidas manuais das peças ósseas, obtendo-se uma semelhança significativa entre as variáveis: MnRB-D, MnRB-E, MxRB-D, MxRB-E, CC-D, CC-E, LC-D, LC-E, com desvio-padrão entre 1,2 e 4,0mm e média geral com variância entre 0,1 e 0,9mm.
