Resumo: This study investigates the perception of fathers and mothers in relation to their children's academic lives. To do this, it looks at data obtained through household interviews with 840 parents living in the peripheral areas of the greater São Paulo metro region. The goals of this study were to learn about: i) parents' perception of the quality of public school education; ii) their different levels of involvement in the academic life of their children; and iii) their opinions and recommendations in relation to education policies. The results of this study show that the parents of public school students can no longer be represented as a homogenous mass, without a critical sense and totally satisfied with the quality of the school. There are segments of parents who are more critical and interested that need to be recognized as allies of the schools and government education secretariats.

Para tanto, analisa dados obtidos por meio de entrevistas domiciliares realizadas com 840 pais moradores da periferia da Grande São Paulo. Os objetivos da pesquisa foram apreender: i) a percepção dos pais sobre a qualidade da educação na rede pública, ii) seus diferentes níveis de envolvimento na vida escolar dos filhos e iii) suas opiniões e recomendações a respeito de políticas em educação. Os resultados dessa pesquisa demonstram que os pais de alunos das escolas públicas não podem mais ser representados como uma massa homogênea, sem senso crítico e totalmente satisfeito com a qualidade da escola.
