Literacy and the educational aspirations of Brazil’s metropolitan youth

Resumo: This paper presents the results of research on literacy of 15 to 24 year olds, living in nine metropolitan regions in Brazil. Based on cognitive testing and questionnaire given to 1,008 young people, the investigation sought to learn about reading, writing, and math abilities among this segment, as well as the relationship between these skills and the practices of literacy, experiences, and educational expectations for these young people. It was found that, even without an exact perception of their deficiencies in relation to reading and writing (as measured by the test), these young people feed high educational expectations, which can be used to advantage in educational policies that integrate basic education with professional education.

Com base em teste cognitivo e questionário aplicados a 1.008 jovens, a investigação buscou apreender as habilidades de leitura, escrita e matemática desse segmento, bem como as relações dessas habilidades com práticas de letramento, experiências e expectativas educacionais dos jovens.
