"Courage for the fight:" challenges and potential in the school-family relationship

Resumo: Based on a reflection on studies regarding the relationship between families and schools, this essay seeks to examine possible paths of action for effective interaction between opposite ends of this relationship. To do this, it analyzes conflicts, tensions and ambiguities that exist in bringing these two institutions closer together, considering the profound changes that they have undergone during the XX century. It discusses different studies concerning this relationship and argues that the school is a relatively recent cultural and social institution that is unable to equally represent the values and cultures of different social groups, resulting in unequal levels of family adhesion to the academic ethos. The essay argues that, from an academic standpoint, strengthening the relationships with families means, more than anything, having a willingness to change within the institution itself. This being the case, it is up to the school to question itself as to how much space really exists for families in the interaction situations that it proposes.

Para tanto, analisa conflitos, tensões e ambiguidades existentes na aproximação entre essas duas instituições, levando em conta as profundas modificações que elas sofreram durante o século XX. Discute diferentes estudos a respeito dessa relação e argumenta que a escola é uma instituição cultural e social relativamente recente que não consegue representar igualmente os valores e culturas dos diferentes grupos sociais, ocasionando uma adesão em níveis desiguais das famílias ao ethos escolar. O ensaio defende que, do ponto de vista da escola, estreitar as relações com as famílias significa, antes de tudo, ter disponibilidade para a mudança dentro da própria instituição.
