Self-esteem and motivation to online learning: the case of female inmates

Resumo: Based on the idea that digital resources can facilitate learning and that self-esteem and motivation to learn are dispositional factors that favor learning, this study characterizes the levels of self-esteem and motivation of female prisoners attending an online training course in relation to the variables associated with them. Data were collected through scales assessing self-esteem and motivation to learn, and by interviews. The results point to the existence of higher levels of self-esteem than those identified by other studies, to a complementarity between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and indicate significant correlations between some of the variables associated with the situation of female prisoners. We conclude that online learning influenced these inmates’ self-esteem and motivation to learn.

Los datos fueron recolectados a través de escalas de evaluación de autoestima y motivación para aprender y a través de entrevistas. Los resultados apuntan a la existencia de niveles de autoestima superiores a los identificados por otros estudios, a una complementariedad entre motivación intrínseca y extrínseca e indican correlaciones significativas entre algunas de las variables asociadas a la situación de las reclusas. Se concluye que el aprendizaje en línea influyó en la autoestima de estas mujeres, así como en su motivación para aprender.Partindo da ideia de que os recursos digitais podem facilitar aprendizagens e que a autoestima e a motivação para aprender constituem fatores disposicionais que as favorecem, o estudo caracteriza níveis de autoestima e de motivação de mulheres reclusas, a frequentar uma formação online, na sua relação com variáveis que lhes estão associadas. Os dados foram recolhidos por meio de escalas de avaliação da autoestima e da motivação para aprender, e por entrevistas. Os resultados apontam para a existência de níveis de autoestima superiores aos que foram identificados por outros estudos, para uma complementaridade entre motivações intrínseca e extrínseca e indicam correlações significativas entre algumas das variáveis associadas à situação das reclusas.
