Resumo: Background: Self-determination has been pointed as an important builder of well-being, self-esteem and competence. The Self-Determination Theory (SDT) shows the importance of developing self-determination to improve levels of competence, performance and commitment in athletes and physical exercise practitioners. Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between motivation regulations, self-esteem and socioeconomic profile of Sanda practitioners from the São Francisco Valley. Methods: All practitioners of the Petrolina (PE) and Juazeiro (BA). Training Centers were selected to participate in the study, totaling 48 individuals. The instruments used were the Exercise Conduct Regulation Questionnaire (BREQ-2), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Questionnaire from the Brazilian Association of Research Companies (ABEP). For data analysis, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Mann-Whitney “U”, Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman correlation tests were used. The significance adopted was p <0.05. Results: The results showed that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the motivation and self-esteem of Sanda practitioners according to gender, marital status, length of practice and socioeconomic status. The following significant correlations were found (p<0.05): Identified Regulation and Injected Regulation (r = 0.26); Identified Regulation and Demotivation (r=-0.28); Introjected Regulation and External Regulation (r=0.24); External Regulation and Motivation (r=0.53); Motivation and socioeconomic status (r=-0.22); and Self-esteem and Socioeconomic Level (r=0.19). Conclusion: It was concluded that gender, marital status, length of practice and socioeconomic status are not intervening factors in the motivation and self-esteem of adult Sanda practitioners. It is noteworthy that a directly proportional relationship was found between the socioeconomic level and self-esteem of the subjects and an inversely proportional relationship between the socioeconomic level and demotivation, indicating that the higher the purchasing power, the higher the self-esteem and the lower the demotivation to practice of exercise.

Foram encontradas as seguintes correlações significativas (p<0,05): Regulação Identificada e Regulação Introjetada (r=0,26); Regulação Identificada e Desmotivação (r=-0,28); Regulação Introjetada e Regulação Externa (r=0,24); Regulação Externa e Amotivação (r=0,53); Amotivação e Nível socioeconômico (r=-0,22); e Autoestima e Nível socioeconômico (r=0,19).
