Resumo: This research aimed to analyze the causes of dropout in the first period of a technical course of CEFET/RJ, Petropolis Unit. Sought not only to identify the factors directly signaled by former students as abandonment causes, but understanding the relationships between the various elements present in his speeches. The research, which involved desk research and field, took the form of a case study, and the Telecommunications Technician Course was the selected for analysis. As regards the approach of the study was qualitative and employed the strategy of content analysis for treating the material, collected via interviews slightly open. The results of the research show causes of evasion related to the following categories: gaps in choosing the course; school factors; personal difficulties; influence of friends; opportunities and institutional and / or governmental disinterest.

Buscamos no solo identificar los factores directamente señalados por los alumnos como causa del abandono, sino la comprension de las relaciones entre los diversos elementos presentes en sus discursos. La investigación, que involucro investigación documental y de campo, tomo la forma de un estudio de caso. En cuanto al enfoque del estudio, fue cualitativo y empleo la estrategia de analisis de contenido para el tratamiento de los materiales recogidos a traves de entrevistas ligeramente abiertas. Los resultados de la investigación apuntaron como causas de evasion las relacionadas con las siguientes categorias: lagunas en la eleccion del curso; factores escolares; dificultades personales; influencia de los amigos; oportunidades y desinteres institucional y/o gubernamental.Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo analisar as causas de evasao no primeiro periodo de um curso tecnico do Cefet/RJ, unidade Petropolis. Buscou nao apenas identificar os fatores diretamente sinalizados pelos ex-alunos como causas do abandono, mas compreender as relacoes entre os diversos elementos presentes em seus discursos. A investigação, que envolveu pesquisa documental e de campo, assumiu a forma de um estudo de caso. No que diz respeito à abordagem, o estudo foi do tipo qualitativo e empregou a estrategia da analise de conteúdo para o tratamento do material, coletado por intermedio de entrevistas semiabertas.
