Physical Capacity for Work and Physical Aptitude in Members of the Fire Brigade

Current analysis relates physical aptitude and capacity for work in members of the fire brigade in a town in the northeastern region of Brazil. All members of the fire brigade, except those working in administrative posts, were invited to participate. Work capacity was informed by a questionnaire, whereas physical capacities measured were body composition, maximum intake of oxygen, flexibility, muscle strength and resistance, equilibrium, speed and agility. Pearson and Spearman’s correlation tests were employed for the analysis of multiple linear regression. Twenty-eight firefighters participated. Positive correlationship existed between capacity for work and the physical aptitude of muscle strength and resistance of the higher members and abdomen, coupled to negative linear correlationship for speed. Higher scores for muscle strength and resistance and speed were associated with higher capacity levels for work in the firefighters.
