Resumo: Highest life expectancy and decrease in mortality rates in Brazil throughout the last years produced a change in the population´s morbo-mortality standard. The analysis of mortality statistics, a traditional health evaluation, is an important subsidy for the knowledge of the epidemiological profile of a population and the consequent planning of health promotion activities. Current analysis deals with the evolution of the death rate of elderly people between 2000 and 2011 in the municipalities of the AMUSEP region and based on data from SIH-SUS/DATASUS. Data evidenced that the number of deaths in the AMUSEP region with SUS hospitalization increased per place of residence and per elderly linearly. Changes in the mortality standard occurred in the region according to the place of residence and the basic death cause, following chapters I - XX of CID-10. It has been reported that municipalities with the highest mortality rates in the region are Iguaraçu, Maringá and Sarandi and the most important death causes in the region comprise infectious and parasite diseases (23.47%), diseases of the circulatory apparatus (20.1%), respiratory apparatus (18.59%) and cancers/tumors (13.56%). Data showed trends in mortality in the AMUSEP region and in places with the highest death rates and the need to establish public policies and health assistance programs which are capable of reducing such rates.
