Resumo: The use of medicinal plants may be of great help in the treatment of persons with diabetes and its complications. Current study evaluates the effects of Mentha piperita and M. spicata juice on the biochemical and anthropometric profile and on blood pressure of diabetic persons. Diabetic patients, males and females, were divided into two groups: one group took M. piperita juice and the other M. spicata (40g leaves/day). Analyses of total cholesterol, triacylglicerides, LDL-c, HDL-c, ASP, ALT, creatine, BMI and arterial pressure were carried out 50 days before and after the treatment. M. spicata-treated group showed a significant decrease in blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-c and blood pressure and an increase in HDL-c levels after treatment. M. piperita-treated group had a significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL-c and an increase in DHL-c. Results show that mentha species may be a help in the decrease of metabolic syndrome risk factors of diabetic patients.

Saúde e Pesquisa; v. 4 n. 3 (2011): set./dez.2176-9206reponame:Saúde e Pesquisa (Online)instname:Cesumar Diretoria de Pesquisainstacron:CESUMARporhttps://periodicos.unicesumar.edu.br/index.php/saudpesq/article/view/1343/1572Barbalho, Sandra MariaFarinazzi, Flávia Maria VasquesGuiguer, Ellen LandgraffSilva, Patricia HelenaSilva, Vanessa SelisOshiiwa, MarieGoulart, Ricardo Alvaresinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2022-05-23T16:29:25Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/1343Revistahttps://periodicos.unicesumar.edu.br/index.php/saudpesqPUBhttps://periodicos.unicesumar.edu.br/index.php/saudpesq/oainaep@cesumar.br2176-92061983-1870opendoar:2022-05-23T16:29:25Saúde e Pesquisa (Online) - Cesumar Diretoria de Pesquisafalse
