Resumo: | Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) constitutes approximately 90% of malignant lesions of the mouth and, in some cases, it may be preceded by potentially malignant disorders, such as Actinic Cheilitis (AC). Early diagnosis and intervention of the lesions reduces both mortality and morbidity. Current analysis comprises a study on AC predominance in 1539 subjects from a rural population in Brazil, constantly exposed to sun rays when working on a sugarcane plantation, and identifies the main clinical features of AC lesions. Control group consisted of 150 subjects working on the same plantation without being exposed to sun rays and with no AC lesions. Further, 141 (9.6%) cases of AC were detected, comprising 106 males and 36 females; 128 were white. It was reported that the greater their exposure to sun rays, the more AC cases were identified. The main alterations consisted of skin cracks, color changes, dryness, roughness and desquamation. |
