Resumo: Hepatitis B is a public health problem. The virus of hepatitis B can lead to acute and chronic hepatitis; which can develop into cirrhosis or fulminant hepatitis, with massive necrosis of the liver. It is estimated that v 400 million people, or 5% of the world population are hepatitis B bearer, but we must consider that many infected individuals are asymptomatic and the symptomatic infections that are inadequately reported, resulting in a frequency of hepatitis B underestimated. In Brazil it is estimated that there are 2 million chronic carriers of this virus. The importance of hepatitis is not limited to the number of people infected, is also the complications of acute and chronic forms. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the profile of the hepatitis B bearer in Maringá. The survey data was conducted by analysis of 339 notification sheets of hepatitis B, during the period from 2000 to 2006, in the 15th Regional Health of Maringá. The data were evaluated according to the quantitative - prospective statistical treatment. The results showed a higher incidence of hepatitis B in males - the highest prevalence of cases in the economically active population, because the sample number of cases has increased from people aged from 16 to 45 years old. There was a significant number of cases in individuals who have completed high school. As a clinical evolution of hepatitis B, this study showed that 4.1% of the cases ended in death, the cure was represented by 35.6% and 13% of patients have become chronic.
