Anti-Oxidant Activity and Phenolic Compounds of Maytenus ilicifolia and Maytenus aquifolium

Resumo: | Maytenus ilicifolia and Maytenus aquifolium, popularly known as "espinheira-santa" in Brazil, are medicinal plants, native to Brazil, and used in popular medicine against inflammations, tumors, leukemia and in the treatment of digestive problems. The anti-oxidant ability and quantity of total phenolic compounds in the leaves of Maytenus ilicifolia and Maytenus aquifolium were evaluated. Aqueous and ethanol extracts were prepared from the dry leaves in concentrations 1000, 500, 250 and 125 g/mL-1. Total phenols were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method and the quantitative analysis of the anti-oxidant activity was performed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical method. Rutin, gallic acid and ascorbic acid were positive controls. The rates of phenolic compounds in all concentrations were higher in the aquous extract of M. ilicifolia, followed by its ethanol extract and by the alcoholic extract of M. aquifolium. The anti-oxidant activity of the aqueous and ethanol extract of Maytenus ilicifolia and Maytenus aquifolium were compared to those of ascorbic acid, gallic acid and rutin. The two species of the “espinheira-santa” have high anti-oxidant potential. |

The two species of the “espinheira-santa” have high anti-oxidant potential.As duas espécies, Maytenus ilicifolia e Maytenus aquifolium, denominadas de "espinheira-santa", são espécies medicinais nativas do Brasil e são utilizadas na medicina popular como antiinflamatórias, antitumorais, antileucêmicas e no tratamento de problemas digestivos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a capacidade antioxidante e quantidade de fenólicos totais presentes nas folhas de Maytenus ilicifolia e Maytenus aquifolium. A partir de folhas secas foram preparados os extratos aquoso e etanólico nas seguintes concentrações: 1000, 500, 250 e 125 g/mL-1. A determinação de fenóis totais foi realizada com método de Folin-Ciocalteu e análise quantitativa da atividade antioxidante foi realizada pelo método de radical 2,2-difenil-1-picrilhidrazil (DPPH). Foram utilizados como controles positivos: rutina, ácido gálico e ácido ascórbico. Em todas as concentrações os teores de compostos fenólicos foram maiores para o extrato aquoso de Maytenus ilicifolia, seguido de extrato etanólico da mesma e, por fim o extrato alcoólico de Maytenus aquifolium. A atividade antioxidante do extrato aquoso e etanólico de Maytenus ilicifolia e Maytenus aquifolium são comparáveis aos de ácido ascórbico, ácido gálico e rutina.
