Resumo: Introduction: there is an increase in life expectancy combined with the reduction of mortality rates causing a contingent of elderly people. Authors show through his studies that physical inactivity is aggravating in reality of this population were therefore physical activity considered to be an essential tool for a good quality of life in the aging process. Objective: analyze muscle force of upper and lower limbs in elderly practitioners and non-practitioners of physical activity. Material and Methods: The study was characterized as longitudinal exploratory nature, with comparative sample, which tests to verify the strength indices and strength of the lower limbs and upper elderly enrolled in Balance and Movement Academy, were applied located in Sobradinho, Distrito Federal. A group of 10 seniors who participate in the activities of resistance training for at least 6 months and another group of 10 seniors who don’t attend any systematic program of physical exercise constituted the sample. Two tests were performed, the test of flexion of the elbow and lift the Chair in 30 seconds, listed in book Evaluation of the elderly-and Functional-Physics (2nd Edition) by author Sandra Marcela Mahecha Matsudo. The two follow the pattern of the test performed by Rikli and Jones (1999).Results: It was verified that the pre-test and the post-test showed no statistical difference in upper and lower limbs. Regular physical activity and an adoption of an active lifestyle are necessary for the promotion of health and quality of life since this practice helps in the prevention and control of chronic non-communicable diseases. Studies carried out in order to verify the strength of upper and lower limbs in elderly describe positive results but do not reach the standard of significance of the test. Conclusions: physical activity in society has been considered an essential tool in the quality of life of the elderly and is essential for the treatment and prevention of diseases. Although this study did not have presented significant results regarding the protocol used, you can see the superiority functional capacity of physically active elderly in carrying out the tests used compared to non-elderly practitioners.

Submitted by Gisely Teixeira (gisely.teixeira@uniceub.br) on 2017-05-03T19:18:24Z No. of bitstreams: 1 21258589.pdf: 1566588 bytes, checksum: 9bfd8851659e346f8d0214c453561897 (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Gisely Teixeira (gisely.teixeira@uniceub.br) on 2017-05-24T17:31:02Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 21258589.pdf: 1566588 bytes, checksum: 9bfd8851659e346f8d0214c453561897 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2017-05-24T17:31:02Z (GMT).
