Resumo: | During the period known as Discoveries and Renaissance, European cartography increases its production, intending to develop and disseminate knowledge about the lands recently found. Various geographic characters, animals, vegetation and people featured the world that conquerors and explorers turned wider to the inhabitants of the Old Continent. Making efforts to cover and introduce all the new territories and human groups in their science and domain, Europeans initiate the production of atlases. Searching the totalization, this type of cartographic work combines Geography and History and appeared at the late XVI century. Owing to the peculiarities of their construction, which put together picture and texts, and to their social and political meanings, the atlases are interesting sources to study culture at Modern Age. |

Searching the totalization, this type of cartographic work combines Geography and History and appeared at the late XVI century. Owing to the peculiarities of their construction, which put together picture and texts, and to their social and political meanings, the atlases are interesting sources to study culture at Modern Age.
