Resumo: Based on the concepts of ethnic distinctions, cultural boundaries and contrastive identity, we consider the period of European overseas expansion as a key moment for the creation of the identities of the several peoples who came into contact in the course of the constitution of the so-called Atlantic world. In that sense, the article analyses written and cartographic documents to check how the Portuguese, lords of an extensive colonial Empire, raised during the 15th-16th centuries, defined Africa and its people from the differences in relation to their own country and culture. Considering the changes of the characteristics attributed to the strange land and peoples that inhabited it, it is possible to note that the identities constructed mirror the process of conquest and the advancement of knowledge about this area of the Empire and their populations.

Imperial Editora do Colégio Pedro II2018-03-18info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionAvaliado pelos paresapplication/pdfhttps://portalespiral.cp2.g12.br/index.php/encontros/article/view/1578Revista Encontros; Vol. 15 No. 28 (2017): Africanities and Transatlantic Dialogues; 09-31Revista Encontros; v. 15 n. 28 (2017): Africanidades e Diálogos Transatlânticos; 09-312447-61961807-3867reponame:Revista Encontrosinstname:Colégio Pedro IIinstacron:CP2porhttps://portalespiral.cp2.g12.br/index.php/encontros/article/view/1578/1142Neves, Martha Coutoinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2018-06-18T04:58:38Zoai:ojs.www.cp2.g12.br:article/1578Revistahttps://www.cp2.g12.br/ojs/index.php/encontrosPUBhttp://www.cp2.g12.br/ojs/index.php/encontros/oai||ribasanam@gmail.com||anaprofa@terra.com.br||sbandoli@uol.com.br2447-61961807-3867opendoar:2018-06-18T04:58:38Revista Encontros - Colégio Pedro IIfalse
