Resumo: The intellectual, literate and journalist Artur Azevedo was born in São Luís do Maranhão in 1855 and he was gifted with a critical spirit in terms of the valorisation of popular culture. As a journalist, he portrayed the social sensibilities of a specific time and also unveiled the ongoing changes and ambiguities of the Brazilian society to the public. In this sense, the article aims at focusing the trajectory of Arthur Azevedo as a great revue writer and supporter of the national theatre throughout his life.

Como jornalista e revistógrafo, retratou nos palcos e jornais as sensibilidades de uma época, traduzindo ao público os limites, as modificações e as ambiguidades de toda uma sociedade.
