Resumo: | The article presents a brief historical framework of the evolution of Brazilian education since the 19th century, i.e., from the political independence of Brazil to the final decade of the past century. Besides, it points out that the historical construction of a given legislation in our country and its respective educational system have been characterized by long-lasting difficulties concerning the universalization of education, the creation of bonds with the social reality in which most beneficiaries is inserted and, also the allocation of necessary resources to achieve a quality basic education. |
