Recentemente, demonstrou-se que a Wolbachia bloqueia a replicação e transmissão de vírus de RNA, como DENV, em um número de espécies de mosquitos, incluindo Ae. aegypti e Aedes albopictus (Skuse), que é naturalmente infectado com Wolbachia e considerado um vetor secundário para DENV. A espécie de mosquito Aedes notoscriptus (Skuse) é altamente prevalente na Austrália, incluindo nas áreas onde se registaram surtos DENV. O mosquito tem sido implicado na transmissão de Ross River e vírus da floresta de Barmah, mas não DENV.
