Resumo: The concern about contraception and birth control is old. However, effective methods emerged only from the 1960s. The young people population represents a group of highly expressive population, which requires effective actions of social institutions and public policies so as to minimize their Sexual Transmitted Diseases vulnerability, pregnancy and early parenthood, ensuring protection and integrated care. Despite the access to information and the dissemination of methods of contraception among young people, it is proven that these still do not cover the whole population. This fact is observed by use or misuse, justified by casual sex life, by the lack of planning of sexual conduct, by incorrect information and fear to take over their sexuality. The objective of this study is to identify the level of knowledge of Faculdade Minas Gerais college studentes about contraceptive methods. It’s a descriptive study, through the application of previously prepared questionnaires. For the statistical analysis of the data, these were transported to the Excel program for Windows and later subjected to descriptive analysis, through simple percentage, charts and graphs. 301 college students participated in this study. It was observed that the beginning of sexual activity took place between 16 and 18 years for 45.8% of them. The main source of information about contraception was the school to 15.7% of the respondents, followed by friends and television in 14.5% of responses and by mothers in 13.3%. Among the best-known contraceptive methods, the condom male appears in 17.5% of the responses, oral contraceptive in 16.3%, followed by injectable in 11.1%. The morning-after pill in 12.8% of the responses was also nominated as contraceptive method. It was also found that 67.8% use contraceptive methods in all sexual relations. The correct use of male or female condom was nominated as an effective method of contraception and prevention of a STD in 93% of the responses. Regarding to the students preference about contraceptive methods, it was verified that 41, 9% of them prefer the male condom and 37,6% the oral contraceptive. Keywords: Contraceptive methods; college students; knowledge; information.

Keywords: Contraceptive methods; college students; knowledge; information.
