Resumo: | Introduction: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a pandemic causing severe respiratory symptoms and changes in the immune system. THE nutritional supplementation is extremely important to support these patients with COVID-19, as nutrients, particularly zinc and selenium, have antioxidant properties and immunomodulatory effects, presenting beneficial effects on the immune system of patients with COVID-19, reducing the viral load and prolonged hospital stay. Objective: Identify which the benefits of zinc and selenium used in nutritional therapy in patients with COVID-19, to determine how important these minerals are in the immunity of these patients. Methods: The present work was based on a bibliographic review, with a descriptive and narrative character, through searches in digital databases such as Scielo, Google Scholar, MEDLINE/PUBMED and LILACS. Articles from January 2020 to June 2021 were selected. total number of works found, 21 were selected for making of the bibliographic review. Bibliographic review: Patients with COVID-19 if benefited from the use of zinc and selenium supplementation, presenting improvement of the immune system, especially in patients with disabilities prior zinc and selenium. Zinc and selenium supplementation showed benefits in reducing viral load and severity, as well as time to hospital internment. Studies have shown that these micronutrients have fundamental role in the immune system. Conclusion: Supplementation of zinc and selenium in COVID-19 patients causes inhibition of viral replication and degradation of the viral genome, reducing the inflammatory process and, consequently, it reduces the time of hospitalization, decreasing its morbidity and mortality and improving the prognosis of these patients. |
