Sustentabilidade na produção de erva mate e os sistemas de certificação: um estudo da região de São Mateus do Sul - PR

The yerba mate chain, of great historical and economic importance for the country, is one of the sectors that presents challenges in relation to sustainability, thought of its triple base concept (social, economic and environmental), especially when the focus is on the producers, mainly the small and medium ones and their perceptions of ecosocioeconomics. Therefore, the following problem is identified: the search for business sustainability in the field advances for certain larger-scale crops and, consequently, greater economic interest, such as coffee and tea, which have their own consolidated sustainability certification processes. However, this is not the case in the yerba mate sector. This study aims to evaluate the sustainability of a stratum of this chain, based on the relationship between the Ervateira São Mateus industry and the producers / suppliers of mate in the region of São Mateus do Sul - PR., considering the existing certification processes such as Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ. The used method is the case study through a data collection script, which uses a semi-structured questionnaire, supported by systematized bibliographic research of the sustainable production chain and the state of the art of sustainable certification in coffee and tea production. As main results, we describe the socioeconomic process that mediates the cultivation and marketing of yerba mate among producers and the beginning of industrialization in one of the region's largest Ervateiras and identifies some ways for possible sustainable certifications of these producers, its barriers and its advantages. The main conclusions reached by this study is that the producers of yerba mate in this region are completely unaware of such certifications, lacking information and external support. However, these producers wish to adequate their properties in view of possible economic and environmental gains. It would be possible to adopt social and environmental certifications to promote sustainability in the yerba mate chain, as there is demand and interest from producers and Ervateiras.
