Resumo: | Onychomycosis is a fungal nail disorder that can affect both fingernails and toenails. A considerable portion of the world's population suffers from this pathogenesis, especially men over 55 years of age. Even though Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton interdigitale fungi are responsible for most infections, Candida albicans yeast also play a significant role in the disease.Despite the fact that there are several antifungal medicines on the market, most of them are not from natural substances. Therefore, the aims of this study was to develop an inert nail polish associated with garlic (Allium sativum) extract and to evaluate its activity in people affected with onychomycosis and against Candida albicans in the in vitro tests. The samples used in the in vitro tests were: reference antifungal enamel drug, garlic extract, pure nailpolish base and the nailpolish associated with garlic extract. In laboratory tests, the method used was the diffusion of the samples on sterile filter paper discs. The antifungal activity of the samples were determinated by mensuring the diameter of the inhibition areas. In the efficacy test in volunteers, the manufactured product was used for two months, analyzing the nails’ conditions before and after the use of the product with photos. Furthermore, subjective perceptions of each involved were registered.Garlic extract showed antifungal activity in the in vitro tests, both in pure form and associated with inert nail polish base. Tests on volunteers also showed a significant result, decreasing the perception of nail degradation. The manufactured product proved to be a good herbal option in the treatment of onychomycoses. |

The manufactured product proved to be a good herbal option in the treatment of onychomycoses.
