Morphological and molecular characterization of Epagri´s rice germoplasm bank in Santa Catarina State, Brazil

Resumo: The objective of this work was to characterize by molecular and morphological procedures the rice entriesof the germplasm bank put out by Santa Catarina State Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Agency-Epagri, with 30morphological descriptors and 111 AFLP markers. The morphological characterization showed that the entries have widegenetic divergence, and many interesting features have been identified for use in the genetic improvement of the cereal. Thegrouping analysis of the morphological characterization showed more divergence in the separation of the big groups than AFLP,but, the AFLP was very efficient in detecting variability between the entries. The molecular analisys showed 40% of variabilityamong entries. Also evident was the narrowing of the genetics of rice cultivars put out for the Southern Region of Brazil.However, the analysis pointed out that Santa Catarina’s lines and the cultivar SCS 114 Andosan have wide genetic divergenceto the other cultivars. The organization of the germplasm bank and the wealth of information about the diversity contained init will be important to facilitate and increase the use of the entries in the rice breeding and germplasm exchange.

A caracterização morfológica indicou que há ampla diversidade genétca entre osacessos, e muitas característcas agronomicamente interessantes foram identfcadas para utlização no melhoramento genétco desse cereal. A análise de agrupamento da caracterização morfológica revelou maior divergência entre os grandes grupos, enquanto a caracterização molecular foi muito efciente na detecção da variabilidade entre os acessos. A análise commarcadores moleculares mostrou 40% de variabilidade genétca entre os acessos. Também foi evidenciado o estreitamento da base genétca dos cultvares recomendados para o sul do Brasil. No entanto, algumas linhagens e o cultvar SCS114 Andosan têm ampla divergência genétca na comparação com os demais cultvares. A organização do banco de germoplasma e a riqueza de informações a respeito da diversidade nele contda serão importantes para facilitar e aumentar o uso dos acessos do bancode germoplasma no melhoramento genétco de arroz e no seu intercâmbio.
